Dirk

Zoe and I get dressed to eat dinner.

"How's your arm?"

"A little itchy, but better. I'll be okay."

I grasp her cheeks and kiss her. "As soon as we finish eating tamales, I'll help you forget about it some more."

She smiles then kisses me but pulls back when a muffled noise comes from the other side of the wall. Zoe puts her hand over her mouth. Her eyes widen. "Do you think they heard us?"

"I'm pretty sure the entire house heard us. These walls aren't very thick."

She reddens.

My heart pounds faster. "Don't be embarrassed, my Little Diva. Let's not hide either."

She swallows. "No?"

"I don't want to. Do you?"

She teases, “So you want to claim me to the world as yours?”

“Yep. What about you? Do you want to admit I’m yours?”

Her expression turns serious. "Yes."

Happiness is an understatement. I kiss her again. "Good." I playfully slap her ass. "Get moving then. I'm dying for your tamales."

"They aren't mine. Everyone helped."

"Sure they are. It's your recipe. And you made them for me, right?"

"Yeah."

"Then they are your tamales." I put my arm around her shoulder and steer her out of the room. More noises fill the air when we pass Andre and Naomi's room.

Guess I'm not the only one in over my head.

It's not even a question. When I told Zoe she would break me if she ever wanted to let me go, I meant it.

Penelope and Axel are in the kitchen, talking to Tinker. Penelope smirks at Zoe when we enter the room, and I pull her tighter to me. "Tell me you didn't eat all the tamales."

Axel points to the oven. "Nope. In there. You're lucky, though, they're delicious, and the best ones I've ever had."

"Agree," Penelope chimes and opens the oven to pull out the tray.

Tinker takes a swig of beer. "Zoe, you can cook in my kitchen every day. I'm addicted to tamales, but mine aren't very good. You've gotta give me your recipe."

I kiss Zoe's head.

She beams and replies, "Sure. But I just pointed. Everyone else did the work.”

Penelope holds the spatula and a plate. "Not true. Dirk, how many do you want?"

"Four."

"Four," Zoe shrieks.

"I had six," Axel admits.

Zoe gapes at us.

Penelope hands me a heaping plate. "Zoe? How many?"

"I'll start with one."

We sit at the table with our food, and Tinker says, "We need to get pictures for the passports."

I stare at Zoe.

"What?"

I turn to Tinker. "How do we disguise her? She can't wear sunglasses or hats with passports. Her hair has been every color on the planet, so that isn't going to help."

Zoe puts her fork down and furrows her eyebrows. I grab her hand and stroke my thumb on the back of it.

Silence ensues until Axel snaps his fingers. "Contacts."

"I don't wear contacts."

"No, but you could have blue or green ones. And if you went really red or super blonde, you would look different."

I take a bite of the tamale and groan—the spicy, salty flavor bursts on my tongue.

She can actually make authentic tamales.

And she made them for me.
